Walk Against Cancer set for June (05/19/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

The Walk Against Cancer is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the Jay County High School track. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be indoors in the gymnasium. Last year the walk raised $20,000 for the Jay County Cancer Society who in turn provided financial support to cancer patients in Jay County.

Next week, please read your Commercial Review and Dunkirk Sun papers carefully. Inside will be a very colorful flyer and pledge form for the 2006 Walk Against Cancer. Please use this form to mark your calendars, collect pledges and sell luminaries for our event. Make plans to attend and visit the car show, concession area, kid’s area, and participate in the theme laps. Times for those activities are on the flyer.

At 9:15 p.m. the luminary ceremony begins with the reading of those names for which a luminary was purchased in memory or honor of a cancer patient. As names are read, 1,000 luminary candles are lit and the track illuminated. Walkers are welcome to walk and enjoy the candlelight until 10:40 p.m.

Our annual survivor dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. with the start of the walk and opening ceremonies. The Jay County Knights of Columbus and the Jay County Cancer Society sponsor the dinner. Each cancer survivor and one guest receive a free meal during this celebration. Cancer survivors receive a free walk shirt to wear during the event. Additional guests are $5 each. Reservations are required before June 14. Please call our message line to register at (260) 726-8110 and leave the survivor’s name, phone number, T-shirt size, and the number of guests.

Details about this year’s Walk Against Cancer will also be forthcoming on our local radio station, WPGW. Registration forms will also be available again at the Jay County Public Library, the Jay County Hospital, Strohl Appliance, and at other local businesses in May.

This past year we assisted more cancer patients than we ever have — over 80 Jay County residents. All the money raised stays here in Jay County to help our friends and neighbors financially as they battle cancer. Cancer treatments and medications can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Many of these costs come at a time when the cancer patient is too ill to work. Please help us raise the funds needed to offset these costs and provide financial assistance for items not covered by insurance (wigs, prosthetics, medications, bandages, etc.)

Thank you to our many sponsors who help us put on the walk to raise the necessary funds for the Jay County Cancer Society. Gold sponsors this year are: the Jay County Cancer Society, Alphabet, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Hartzell Fan Inc., Jay County Hospital, and the Jay County Knights of Columbus.

Silver sponsors are the Portland Eye Center, Immaculate Conception Altar Rosary Society, Alpha Delta Gamma Nu, MainSource Bank, Moser Engineering, and the Vormohr Medical Center.

We thank you for your past support and look forward to seeing you at the track this year. If you have any questions for the Jay County Cancer Society or wish to make a donation, please feel free to contact us at (260) 726-8110 or P.O. Box 614, Portland, Ind. 47371.
