WALK Against Cancer set June 27

To the editor:

In the next few weeks Jay County newspaper subscribers and readers will find 2009 WALK Against Cancer advertisements. It is our hope that the community will join us on June 27 at Jay County High School to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.

Activities start with a survivor dinner at 6 p.m. (reservations required by June 13), a vendor area and family activities from 7-9 p.m., opening ceremony at 8 p.m. and the liminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the JCHS track rain or shine. We will not be moving the event indoors in case of inclement weather. Bring a jacket and umbrella.

Fliers for the event are available at Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Jay Community Center and many local businesses. The flier us also available online at www.jaycountychamber.com. It has the times and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free WALK t-shirt while supplies last.

How can you help?

There are many ways:

•Collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc., as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK.

•Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf.

•Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible.

•Display the flier in your place of business.

•Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK.

The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.

Remember that all money donated to the Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their uninsured cancer-related expenses.

We would like to thank the sponsors who make this event possible: Hartzell Fan, Stoneridge Electronics, Delta Theta Tau Sorority - Xi chapter, Jay County Knights of Columbus, Mayor Hosier's 2009 Charity Golf Outing, Family Worship Center, MainSource Bank, Altar Rosary Society, Remember When (Van Skyock family), Jay County Hospital, Gamma Nu Sorority, Fellowship Baptist Church, Moser Engineering, True Value, Fullenkamp Machine, Inman U-Loc Storage and Display Craft.

If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.

Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening of June 27 as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate those who have won the fight against cancer.

Thank you,

Bev Inman and

Linda Leonhard, co-chairs,
