Walk showed support in face of cancer (07/26/05)

To the editor:

On behalf of the Jay County Cancer Society, the Walk Against Cancer committee, and the cancer patients who benefited from this event, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2005 Walk Against Cancer. We are still receiving donations with over $20,000 generously given to the cancer society.

A big thank you to our Gold sponsors: Alphabet, Jay County Hospital, Moser Engineering, Hartzell Fan, Delta Theta Tau, Jay County Knights of Columbus, and the Jay County Cancer Society. We are also very grateful for our Silver sponsors: Qualtech Tool, Portland Eye Center, Immaculate Conception Altar Rosary Society, Alpha Delta Gamma Nu, Vormohr Medical Center, and MainSource Bank.

A special thank you goes to Delta Theta Tau for staffing the registration area, State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice for staffing the luminaries, the Knights of Columbus for the survivor dinner and concessions, Doug Loy for being emcee, the sheriff’s department for providing security, the Jay School Corporation for being a gracious host to the Walk again, and Deb Gillespie and Strohl’s Appliances for providing some healthy and tasty treats.

There are so many people involved that I apologize if I have left anyone out.

Walkers could not help but notice some of the different colored shirts that were worn. Alphabet employees wore a very vibrant “safety green” that was almost as bright as the luminaries!

The Portland Eye Center wore maroon, and Delta Theta Tau chose a hunter green. The shirts were purchased in advance from the Jay County Cancer Society so that theses groups could show their support by wearing a unique color at the Walk.

The luminary ceremony at dusk absolutely took your breath away!

The track was illuminated with 1,000 luminary candles that were lit in honor or memory of cancer patients. There were well over 350 people memorialized during this ceremony. It was the perfect way to show our support of our friends and neighbors and their families who have been afflicted with this disease.

In 2005, the Jay County Cancer Society has helped 86 cancer patients residing in Jay County with financial expenses related to their diagnosis and treatment.

These expenses include items not covered by insurance, medications, doctor’s visits, treatments, etc.

Come join us next year to experience the luminary ceremony, car show, kids’ area, theme laps, great food, and camaraderie on Saturday evening, June 24, 2006.

If you’d like to make a donation, learn more about the Jay County Cancer Society, or help at next year’s event, please contact us at 260-726-8110 or P.O. Box 614, Portland, Ind. 47371.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Carducci
