The Jay County Landfill took in about five and a half tons less in trash in December than in November, and, as a result, less income came in to the Jay County Solid Waste District.
District board members learned Monday afternoon the drop in tonnage resulted in an approximate $6,000 drop in income for the month. There were 13,689 tons of trash taken to the site in December as compared to 19,184 in November.
The tipping fee paid to the district on each eligible ton of trash dumped in the Jay County Landfill is $1.25.
Kay Hayes, director of the solid waste district, said less dumping at the landfill could partially occur as a result of weather.
“Other factors contribute as well,” she said.
Other such decreases have been seen in the past three years.
In other business, the board agreed to keep the same officers as in 2005.
“As they say, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’” board member Gerald Kirby said.
President of the board is Milo Miller Jr., vice-president is Bill Gibson, and secretary is Gary Theurer.
The board also approved Hayes’ request to provide an additional recycling trailer in Dunkirk to make up for one that was canceled on Dec. 24.
Hayes explained profits from the trailer would go to the Dunkirk Public Library.
The board also approved Hayes’ request to pay the Soil and Water Conservation District four quarterly payments of $2,500 instead of $10,000 in a lump sum.
“I want some tracking,” Hayes said. “I want to know what it’s going for.”
Hayes also told the board the Indiana Recycling Coalition is becoming more active.
“The IRC has not done much (in the past),” she said.
The coalition was established to help properly manage old electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, hand-held games and cell phones.
Expenses for December for the waste district totaled $19,025.56 and income for the month was $15,382.[[In-content Ad]]
