Waste district looking for help

A local group is looking for part-time help to assist in spreading the word about recycling and preserving the environment.
Members of the Jay County Solid Waste District’s board of directors gave the approval Monday to advertise for a part-time contract educator who will work with local schools and other groups.
With longtime director Kay Hayes expected to resign before the end of the year, the district board reduced staffing levels as part of the 2011 budget. Financial/administrative assistant Jill Hall is expected to be hired to handle both finances and the day-to-day activities of the district, with assistance from the new contract educator.
No salary has been established for the new educator position, which is expected to be for 20 hours or less per week, with at least 5 of those hours focused on education. The advertisement will be published in The Commercial Review through the first two weeks of November.
Also Monday, board members Faron Parr, Bill Gibson, Dan Orr and Jim Zimmerman instructed Hayes and Hall to shop for quotes for insurance on a district-owned pick-up truck.
A statement from the current insurance carrier indicated the 2011 premium for full coverage of a 2000 Ford F-150 truck would be $490, with a $1,000 deductible.Earlier this year, the board had considered selling the truck but has now changed its mind. Funding for gas, insurance and other items related to the truck was not included in next year’s budget.
In other business, board members:
•Approved claims totaling $18,811.69, leaving balances of $17,740.90 in checking and $52,655.47 in an investment account. Thanks to a recent increase in the district tipping fee to $1.75 per ton, income in September was $21,544. That fee is collected and paid to the district by the Jay County Landfill.
•Allowed a transfer of $150 to office employment from a computer/printer line item. The money will be used to pay for an annual maintenance contract on a printer.[[In-content Ad]]
