Waste plan reviewed
Mercer County landfill asking for expansion
FORT RECOVERY — Council members here received the county’s new solid waste plan on Monday.
Currently, waste collected in the village is sent to the county landfill in Celina or to the Jay County Landfill. Countryside Waste Services, which owns the Celina landfill, are requesting approval to expand the landfill from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. This project could take between three to five years to be approved, council members said at Monday’s meeting. The landfill in Celina is running out of space, according to information from the Mercer County Solid Waste District
The new plan also prepares for the time when the landfill has inadequate space and requires the village to pay a $4,666 annual assessment to the district if tipping fees generated by the landfill don’t cover the costs, Diller said this morning. Village officials can choose how to pay the funds, by adding onto the price of the village’s trash bags or taking from the general fund or through a property assessment, Diller said.
Council members are requested to approve the county’s solid waste plan by Wednesday, Nov. 3. Public hearings on the plan will be held, but the dates have not been set.
Also Monday, Fort Recovery village administrator Randy Diller told the council the western blocks of Milligan and Harrison streets could be without street lights sometime during the week of Aug. 23. The current lights will need to be removed to install the new lights.
In other business, the council approved the third and final reading of a resolution to place a five-year renewal request for the village’s tax levy on the November election ballet.
The tax levy will raise approximately $45,000 a year for stormwater projects in the village.
Also Monday, council members:
•Heard Diller report there has not been much response to the village’s silent auction of numerous items including a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria formerly used by the Fort Recovery Police Department, a 1989 Dodge Dakota, bicycles, snowboards, scooters, Christmas decorations, a floor sweeper and an electric typewriter. The items can be inspected at the village’s street department barn.
Sealed bids should be delivered to the village hall by noon on Friday, Diller said. The bids will be opened by town employees, and the highest bidder will be contacted by village officials.
•Approved two resolutions to transfer $4,500 to the water bond retirement fund from the village’s water revenue fund and $3,500 to the industrial park debt service fund from the income tax fund.
•The council’s next meeting will be Wed., Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. (Ohio time.) The meeting date was changed due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 6.[[In-content Ad]]
