Water work on schedule in Redkey
Redkey Town Council
By Robert Banser-
REDKEY - The town's $2 million water system improvement project is almost complete and work is right on schedule, officials reported at Thursday night's council meeting.
"We're just about done," Doug Stanley, president of the Redkey Council, said Thursday, calling for signing of a certificate of substantial completion with the three contractors responsible for the different phases of the project.
Stanley said a final meeting with contractor representatives and the town's consulting engineers, Commonwealth of Indianapolis, is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3 at 10 a.m. the town hall. Any problems should be discussed at that time, he said.
The project included demolition of the old water tower and construction of a new, larger one by Phoenix Fabricators and Erectors of Avon; water line improvements by Brackney Corporation, Brookville; and upgrading the water plant by Mid States Construction Company of Redkey.
Also at Thursday night's town council meeting, partial payments were unanimously approved to all three firms from the town's federal loan construction fund from the United States Department of Agriculture.
Mid States was granted a partial payment request of $34,872. Phoenix was granted a partial payment of $39,282. Brackney was granted $10,615. A payment of $2,669 was approved for Commonwealth Engineering.
This put the overall payment total for Thursday at slightly more than $87,400.
In other business Thursday night, town council members:
•Heard from Redkey resident Joe Anderson that the street signs along the newly improved sections of Ind. 1 in town do not include any mention of Meridian Street. He explained that this could prove to be a problem for ambulance, police and delivery vehicle personnel. In Redkey the state highway is Meridian Street. Prior to the highway construction project it was identified that way by the various street signs, and Stanley said he would check to see if this could be done again.
•Approved spending approximately $1,000 for stone for the resurfacing of George Street to make it safe for highway traffic again, now that the Ind. 1 street resurfacing project was completed.
•Approved an estimate of $771 from Larry Kelly Roofing to repair the concession stand roof in Redkey's Morgan Park. This amount will be covered by insurance once the $250 deductible is paid, and council member Charles Noble said he will cover the deductible as a donation from his business, the Key Palace Theatre.
•Noted that the Christmas holiday season will officially begin in Redkey at 6 p.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, when Santa Claus will arrive on a town fire truck at the gazebo in the downtown mini-park, Oak and High Street. This event is annually sponsored by town leaders and the Redkey Volunteer Fire Department.
