Waters hits first home run of season in sweep (04/09/05)
Collegiate check-up
A graduate of Jay County helped the Manchester baseball team to a double-header sweep over Defiance Sunday.
Mitch Waters, who graduated from JCHS in 2002, had the better of his two games in the opener, an 11-2 Manchester victory. He smashed a home run and a double as he finished 2-for-4. He drove in two runs and scored twice.
He added a run in the second game, which the Spartans won 8-6.
Waters, a junior transfer from Ancilla, is hitting .205 this year with eight RBIs and seven runs in 13 games. He has pitched 71/3 innings and is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA.
Kerri McClung
The Jay County graduate had another solid meet as the Bowling Green women’s track team placed third last weekend at the 11-team Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
McClung earned her first third-place finish in the shot put with a launch of 13.73 meters (45 feet). She finished behind Jo Young of the host Bearcats and Kelly Pohlman of Dayton.
McClung also took third place in the hammer throw. Her toss of 48.56 meters (159 feet) put her behind Young and Western Kentucky’s Angie Gardner.
Amanda Habegger
The senior and graduate of South Adams posted a pair of top-eight finishes as the Bluffton University women’s track team finished 10th at the 11-team Ohio Invitational at Ohio University last weekend.
Habegger had her best effort in the 400-meter hurdles where she finished sixth. She crossed the line in 1-minute, 13.57 seconds.
She was eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.25 seconds.
Steph Welch
Another former Starfire, she competed in a pair of events at the Ohio Invitational.
Welch took 14th place in the long jump at 13 feet, 51/2 inches. She was also 15th in the 800-meter run in 2-minutes, 41.49 seconds.
Nicole VanSkyock
The Jay County graduate helped the Anderson University women’s track team as it won the 12-team Anderson Runners Forum April 2.
VanSkyock, a freshman, finished 10th in the 1,500-meter run. She crossed the finish line in 5-minutes, 31.46 seconds.
Joscie Kaup
A Fort Recovery graduate, she was part of a six-run sixth inning which helped the Syracuse University softball team to an 8-5 victory as it split a double-header with Connecticut April 1.
The Orange dropped the opener 2-0, and the second game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Kaup entered the game as a pinch runner after teammate Cassie Morales hit an RBI double to right field. She moved to third on a single by Alexis Switenko and scored on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Mosch.
Carrie Nichols
The South Adams graduate had a couple of hits, but they were not enough as the University of St. Francis softball team slipped to 6-15 Tuesday with a couple of losses to Marian College.
Nichols, a sophomore, went 1-for-3 in the opener and had an RBI as the Cougars lost 4-2. She added a single in the 4-0, game-two defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
