Waters is ace for Manchester (04/01/06)

Collegiate Check-up

Focusing on the mound has paid off.

Mitch Waters, who played third base last season, gave up his bat to work on pitching full time this season for Manchester College. Now he’s the team’s top hurler.

Waters, a 2002 Jay County graduate, leads the Spartans in ERA (1.63), is tied for first in wins (three) and is second in strikeouts (23) through the first 18 games of the season.

The senior has gone the distance in his only two starts of the year, winning both.

He struck out seven and allowed just one earned run in an 8-2 victory over Husson March 5. He gave up nine hits and did not walk a batter.

In Manchester’s 6-2 victory over Transylvania March 25, allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings.

Waters, who carries an outstanding 1.12 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched), has also blanked opponents in four of his six relief appearances — against Alderson-Broaddus, DePauw, Indiana Wesleyan and Aurora — thus far this season.
