Watson the change needed
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Back a few months ago there was a petition circulation requesting the resignation of (Dunkirk Mayor Ron Hunt). Well now you can make this a reality with the primary election. The mayor stated that he started the K-9 program. With no planning and haphazardly done, like everything else. Like a trip to Texas for a free dog. Why do people give things away free? They are usually not worth much, as was the case with the dog. It was not trainable and a waste of money.
Ninety percent of the people you talked to didn’t even want a dog. What has it done? You would think sometimes it was used just to intimidate people, like the little old lady at the Pak-A-Sak.
A lot of the claims of starting projects were already in the planning stages. In 3.5 years our downtown wasn’t cleaned during the winter. Our downtown used to be cleaned in previous administrations. Why all of a sudden would you clean from city limit to city limit?
Then there is the street situation. When you don’t hardly have enough money to fix the streets why would you try to name an alley beside your house to get it passed? That $4,500 would sure help on the streets. Some more poor planning.
I almost forgot about the police cars from Hartford City (free). A real good choice for the dog car (wore out). By the way, this dog wasn’t supposed to cost the city any money. I would like to see the expense sheet.
Well, we have a chance to right all of this wrong. We can vote in the primary for someone who is well versed on city and county government. He belongs to these various organizations and knows what’s going on. He is and always has been interested in Dunkirk.
Also is very aware of the financial situation of the city. We need to get the various city departments back in good working order. No more picture taking or spying. This is a prime example of what happens when unqualified people are elected. Make a wise choice. The one we need to vote for to get the job done is Dan Watson.
He has the ability and the know-how to get the job done. We can get our zoning to work and other committees, and just maybe we can get good old Dunkirk back on the right track.
It doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican, you can vote in the primary. So vote for Dan Watson and let’s start turning things around.

To the editor:
As we get ready for another election, let us look at what makes a good public official. When we elect qualified officials, our local, state and federal government will return to strong principles rather than useless politics.
Our elected officials need to have an outstanding reputation. Public servants need to be knowledgeable and have understanding of the U.S. and State Constitutions. He or she must be able to solve difficult problems with insight and a keen mind. How do we measure success? When the term of office is complete, officials must have proved to have been loyal to their job objectives. This includes having a record of uncorrupt character, sincere integrity, and loyal trustworthiness.
Electing persons of high caliber is a big goal, but if we don’t, our current liberties will be taken away one tax, law, ordinance, and job at a time. We must be vigilant citizens of the freedoms we have inherited.
Here is the charge: Educate yourselves about each candidate. Talk to candidates and ask questions. Do your homework before voting. These tasks will ensure that we elect the very best person into office.
After the election, we need to hold these public officials accountable to their campaign promises. We need to give them praise when it is deserved, and give our opinion when it is necessary.
