Waugh breaks record at Calvin

Collegiate Check-up

On the final night of the Calvin College Winter Invitational, Erika Waugh provided the highlight.
The 2011 South Adams High School graduate set a new school record for the host Knights women’s swim team, which finished fourth out of 12 squads.
Waugh broke her own Calvin record in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing as the runner-up in 2 minutes, 5.59 seconds. She set the previous mark of 2:06.29 last season.
She was also 17th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.11 and 40th in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.89. Her top relay effort at the meet came with teammates Betsy Otten, Shelby Cloyd and Margaret Rechel for 12th-place in the 200 freestyle.

Mary Hudson
Jay County – 2012
Also competed for the host Knights at the Calvin College Winter Invitational.
Hudson was 12th for the Knights in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 31.82 seconds. She was also 17th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.95 and 36th in the 50 freestyle in 26.52.
The freshman teamed with Erika Waugh, Maria Sedjo and Alexi Scott for a time of 1:54.19 to take 13th place in the 200 medley relay.

Greg Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2010
Powered the NCAA Division II No. 13 University of Findlay men’s basketball team to an 84-72 victory Saturday over Northwood.
Kahlig shot 9-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from long distance, and made all of his four free throws for 27 points. He added three rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Oilers (4-1).
The junior finished with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in an 85-63 victory over Lake Superior State on Nov. 29.

Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Scored for the Defiance College women’s swim team Saturday as it fell 160-34 to Wilmington and 173-21 to host John Carroll.
Miller’s top effort came in the 200-yard individual medley as she took third place in 2 minutes, 27.39 seconds. She finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.99 for fifth place and teamed with Brittany Pease, Tahiriah Simons and Jacqueline Loock for a fourth-place time of 1:53.55 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Was the only Huntington University women’s basketball player to shoot better than 50 percent from the field Tuesday as the Foresters fell 77-67 to Purdue Calumet.
Speed shot 8-of-14 and hit both of her free-throw attempts to finish with a game-high 19 points. She also had five assists, three rebounds and two steals for the Huntington (7-3).
The junior totaled 14 points, five assists, three steals and one rebound in Saturday’s 75-52 win over Grace.

Cori Vormohr
Jay County – 2009
Turned in a couple of 10th-place finishes as the Ball State University women’s swim team placed third out of seven squads at the House of Champions Invitational, which was contested Friday through Sunday at IUPUI.
Vormohr was 10th in both breaststroke events for the Cardinals, who were just three points behind runner-up Evansville. She posted a time of 1 minute, 8.57 seconds in the 100-yard race and 2:27.26 in the 200.
The senior was also 13th in the 50 freestyle in 25.14. She teamed with Carlena Magly, Elaine Pitsas and Jillian Bischoff for third in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.54, and joined Mallory Miles, Emily Wisolek and Stacey Wierman in placing fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.09.

Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery – 2009

Reached double figures for the sixth straight game in the Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team’s 75-48 victory over Marietta on Saturday.
Snyder totaled 12 points for the Polar Bears (6-1), who were up by 23 at halftime. She also had three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.
The senior finished with nine points, three rebounds and one block in Wednesday’s 64-42 victory over Baldwin Wallace.

Kylie Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2012
Tallied a career-high 12 points Nov. 28 in the University of Northwestern Ohio’s 92-79 loss to Davenport.
Kahlig did most of her scoring at the free-throw line, where she finished 8-of-9. She also had eight rebounds and two assists for the Racers (1-7).
The freshman finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals in Saturday’s 67-56 loss to Sienna Heights.

Maddie Moore
South Adams – 2009
Was one of 19 Bluffton University athletes who earned All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic honors.
Moore, a senior on the Beavers’ women’s soccer team, earned the award for the third straight season. Athletes must carry a grade point average of at least 3.5 in order to be eligible for the honor.

Holly Brunswick
Fort Recovery – 2011
Hit her only 3-point attempt Nov. 29 in the Ohio Dominican University women’s basketball team’s 67-57 loss to Saginaw Valley State.
Brunswick was 1-of-2 from the field overall and finished with three points, one rebound and one assist. She added one rebound Saturday as the Panthers (3-2) fell 67-60 to Wayne State.

Neal Fennig
Jay County – 2011
Picked up a 15th-place finish for the Ball State University men’s swim team, which placed fourth out of five teams at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational that concluded Sunday.
Neal Fennig finished in 5 minutes, 2.13 seconds, to place 15th in the 500-yard freestyle. He joined Austin Goodman, Cam Watters and Ethan Hall for a ninth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:22.88.

Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Played for the NAIA Division II No. 15 Bethel College women’s basketball tea as it defeated Holy Cross 93-59 on Tuesday.
Hunt finished with one rebound and one assist. She is a sophomore guard for the Pilots (8-2).

Jason Pottkotter
Fort Recovery – 2012
Helped the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team to a 72-57 victory Saturday over Sienna Heights.
Pottkotter grabbed one rebound as the Racers improved to 3-4. He also had two points as UNOH fell 79-67 to Davenport on Nov. 28.
