We take it for granted

Editorial

It’s something Jay County residents take for granted.
You go into a restaurant and there, usually near the cash register, you’ll see the food service certificate indicating that the place is licensed and has been inspected by the county health department.
It’s so routine you may have never noticed it.
But it’s not routine everywhere.
Amid a personnel flap at the Randolph County Health Department, it turns out that there’s no county requirement there to display a food service license.
A county commissioner asserts that some Randolph County res-taurants have never had food service licenses at all and that nearly half didn’t pay a licensing fee last year.
If true, that’s disconcerting to say the least. It also makes us all the more appreciative of the food service inspections done regularly by the Jay County Health Department. The staff is so diligent that every single vendor at every fair or festival gets checked out in addition to the year-round restaurants.
And the impetus to run those inspection reports in The Commercial Review came from the health department itself.
They find that sharing the information not only empowers the public it also helps with enforcement.
It’s anybody’s guess how long it will take to sort out the situation in Randolph County, but it’s one we’re glad Jay County doesn’t have to worry about. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
