Weather is a key factor

Rays of Insight

It’s Super Bowl week.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Super Bowl Sunday is my favorite day of the year. It surpasses Christmas, Thanksgiving and every other holiday.
I love football that much.
So the questions and answers this week will be focused on the big game.
But first, let’s squeeze in a little college basketball.
••••••••••
How long should new coaches such as Ball State's James Whitford and Butler's Brandon Miller have to prove themselves?
—Aaron Loy, Portland

Four years.
This isn’t a hard and fast answer. There are exceptions to every rule.
There may be cases when a coach’s behavior leads to early firing. And sometimes a person who seemed perfect in an interview ends up just not being a good fit.
But as long as we’re just talking about wins and losses, any coach in the college game (or high school, for that matter) deserves four years.
It takes that much time for a coach to have his or her own team, full of players he or she has recruited who have not played for another college coach.

In your opinion which is the greatest side/prop bet for the Super Bowl this year?
—Nathan Miller,
Wanamaker

It’s certainly not the coin toss, the length of the national anthem or the color of Gatorade that will be thrown on the winning coach. (Yes, these are all things that can be wagered on.)
My favorite this year is: What will the lowest temperature during the game be? (over/under 28 degrees)
I like that one because the weather could have a major impact on the game. (And the latest arctic blast hammering the nation should illustrate why it’s silly to play the biggest game in a cold-weather city without a dome stadium.)
••••••••••
Those were the only two questions from readers this month, but I’ll answer one more: Who will win the Super Bowl?
In the preseason, I picked Denver and Seattle to reach the big game. And I said the Broncos would win.
I stuck with the same two teams during my playoff picks, but went with Seattle to take the title
So it seems I need to break the tie. And I will.
In chilly New Jersey, power running and defense will prevail.
