Weighing in on CFS controversy (12/23/2008)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

This letter is in regards to the article about the Community and Family Services Inc. board in The Commercial Review on Monday, Dec. 15. If they think that just because they have been running amok in the programs that they can just voice their opinions on who should be a good choice for the executive board, they should think twice.

Clarel and Kay Strausburg have had their noses into projects that were working just fine before they butted in. You can't just step in and think you know the programs enough to change everything. Mr. (Bill) Kelly did a wonderful job working in that capacity for as long as he was able to. Mr. Bruner is the right man for the job.

The Strausburgs have lost their way in doing what is good for the poor and working poor in our county. They took several good programs and made a joke out of them and how they severe the public.

Let's talk about the real purpose of one of the programs. The Thrift Shop was not intended for the purpose of running a business, per se. It was designed for the people that couldn't afford the basic bits of clothing needed for everyday life. So the poor could be properly clothed in the winter and have clothes for the kids.

The supermarket chain that supplies a few items free to the food bank sent those things to help the people, not make a profit.

A lot of people enjoyed shopping in that store because if they couldn't afford the price and Mr. Kelly knew about it, they knew he would give them a fair deal.

The clothing was clean and without holes or tears, and you could find things at a reasonable price. Now there is almost nothing but junk and not items one could use every day.

No dishes for people that lose everything, no pots or pans. Junk.

How many people want to shop second-hand for junk that is higher priced? The profits of the thrift store were supposed to help the food bank.

Who appointed Clarel to be spokesman for the advisory board? If he doesn't like what is going on within the organization, he and his wife should move on and let those that still care for the public do their volunteer work.

Some volunteers overstay their usefulness. This isn't their Community and Family Services; it belongs to us, the people of Jay County - the ones that truly take care of their neighbors.

People shouldn't have to go without the things they need because some people are power hungry and want to control the things that are better left to others.
