Wellman drives in 5 vs. Lakers

Danielle Wellman wouldn’t mind facing Roosevelt a few more times.
Wellman, who played at Jay County High School for two years before transferring to Wapahani, racked up five hits and five RBIs Saturday to lead the Grace College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the host Lakers.
The freshman had two hits, three RBIs and a run in the Lancers’ 11-4 opening win. She added a 3-for-5 effort with three runs and two RBIs in a 14-11 victory in game two.
Wellman had a hit in each game of Grace’s doubleheader split Wednesday with Indiana Tech. She totaled three hits, a run and an RBI on March 28 as the Lancers (6-16) split a doubleheader with Manchester.
She ranks second in the Crossroads League with a team-high 23 RBIs. She is hitting .385 with 15 runs and eight stolen bases.

Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Took the runner-up spot in his only event for the Indiana Tech men’s track team at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, which was held Friday and Saturday.
Reynard posted a time of 53.53 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. He was second behind Findlay’s Timothy Sanders (53.01) and finished one tenth of a second ahead of third-place William Cole of Buffalo.

Billy Wellman
Ball State – 2009
Drove in three runs for the Ball State University baseball team Wednesday in a 10-9 loss to Northern Kentucky.
Wellman went 2-for-5 with a double for the Cardinals (12-13), who led 8-1 after four innings before falling to the one-run defeat. He drove in three runs and scored once.
The red-shirt junior finished with three hits and a run in BSU’s weekend series against Kent State.

Tim Lehman
South Adams – 2012

Contributed to a relay victory for the Goshen College men’s track team March 28 as it hosted the Goshen Invitational.
Lehman joined Daniel Zelaya, Lucas Harnish and Billy Funk to post a winning time of 8 minutes, 6.96 seconds, in the 4x800-meter relay. He also had a time of 52.19 for eighth place in the 400 dash.
The freshman teamed with Joel Yoder, Logan Steingass and Harnish to place third in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.95.

Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Was one of five Huntington University softball players to record at least two hits Friday in the Foresters’ 11-10 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene in the second game of a doubleheader.
Speed finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for HU (6-6), which scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the win. She also had two hits as the Foresters dropped the opener 9-8.
The junior had two hits and a run Saturday as Huntington won the second game of a doubleheader 12-4 over Siena Heights. She finished with a single and two runs March 28 in a 10-8 victory over Goshen.

Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Helped the Indiana University East men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish as it competed Friday and Saturday at the Berea College Spring Tee-Off.
Houck opened the tournament with a 90 at Battlefield Golf Club. He came back Saturday to shoot his best round of the spring thus far with an 85 as he posted the No. 3 score for the Red Wolves at the 36-hole event with a 175.

Megan Taylor
Jay County – 2011
Ran for the Manchester College women’s track team, which finished as the runner-up in an 11-team field Saturday at the Hanover Invitational.
Taylor picked up a point for the Spartans with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. She posted a time of 5 minutes, 18.83 seconds.
The sophomore was also one of nine MU athletes to earn Academic All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for the winter sports season. Athletes must earn a varsity letter and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 to earn the award.[[In-content Ad]]
