Wellman key to BSU offense
Collegiate Check-up
The Cardinals are off to a much better start than a year ago, and a Jay County High School graduate is a big reason for the improvement.
Billy Wellman, JCHS class of 2009, is on a four-game hitting streak and had a pair of hits in the Ball State University baseball team’s 10-2 victory Sunday over Harvard.
Wellman smacked an RBI single in the first inning to give the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish. He finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run.
The senior first baseman also had a one hit apiece in 5-3 losses Saturday to Ohio State and Friday to Coastal Carolina.
Wellman has driven in a team-best 12 runs so far for the Cardinals (6-8), who won just three of their first 17 games last season. He is hitting .295 with a .373 on-base percentage, seven runs, four doubles and a home run.
Greg Kahlig
Ft. Recovery – 2010
Helped lead the University of Findlay men’s basketball team to an NCAA Division II Tournament berth as it won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Tournament championship.
Kahlig scored in double figures in all three tournament games for the third-seeded Oilers (22-7), including 12 points in a 75-69 win over Lake Superior State in the title game Sunday. He also had four rebounds and one assist.
The junior totaled 15 points, two rebounds and one assist in Saturday’s 54-51 semifinal win over Michigan Tech.
Findlay will open play in the NCAA Division II Tournament against Drury at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Recorded hits in each of the Huntington University softball team’s first two games Saturday as it opened with a sweep of a doubleheader of Brescia University.
Speed scored in each of the final two innings of the second game of the doubleheader as the Foresters fought back from a 2-0 deficit for a 6-2 win. She also had a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases.
The junior notched a single in Huntington’s game-one win.
Kendra Brunswick
Ft. Recovery – 2011
Played for the Edison Community College women’s basketball team Friday as it fell 80-75 to Cincinnati State in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Regional XII Division II District I Tournament.
Brunswick led the way with nine assists for the Chargers, who finished the season at 17-7.
She also had seven rebounds, six points and one steal.
Neal Fennig
