ANSONIA — Clear a spot on the mantle, Megan Wenning gets Tuesday’s game ball.

In her first career start, Wenning led an Indian domination, by posting game highs in points and rebounds while shooting over 50 percent from the field and finishing with a perfect mark from the foul line. Her performance was typical of Fort Recovery as a whole in the game as it crushed the Ansonia Tigers 67-20.

Wenning scored by far her career-high in points as she totaled 21. She shot 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line for the Tribe, which went for 52 percent from the field in the first half and hit for 45 percent for the game.

Ansonia, on the other hand, shot just 29 percent overall.

Wenning, starting in place of fellow senior Krystal Rammel who was out with strep throat, also grabbed six rebounds as the Indians dominated the glass to the tune of a 32-12 advantage. She added two steals, one assist and one block in 23 minutes.

The Tribe (9-4) is expected to have Rammel back Thursday when its visits undefeated Division IV No. 2 Marion Local.

Tiff Gaerke joined Wenning by grabbing six rebounds and was also outstanding from the field. She shot 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the field as she finished with 14 points.

Vicki Roessner had 10 points, seven steals and four assists, and Holly Stein added 10 points and four rebounds. Sara Fortkamp finished with five assists and five steals, and Kelsie Will also grabbed four boards.

Ansonia, which turned the ball over 33 times to Fort Recovery’s nine, fell behind by six after the first quarter and got blown away in the second. The Indians outscored them 21-3 in that period for a 35-11 halftime lead.

The Tigers managed just three points again in the fourth quarter of the 47-point defeat.

Kendra Billenstein was the top scorer for Ansonia with seven points. She also had a team highs of four rebounds and two blocks.

Amanda Fraley had four points, and Andria Erisman and Lesley Pitsenbarger each grabbed three boards.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery was equally dominant in JV action, holding Ansonia scoreless in the third quarter of a 51-16 rout.

Abby Niekamp paced the Indians, who led 19-3 after one period and increased the margin to 20 at halftime, with 14 points. She also had eight rebounds, four blocks three assists and a steal.

Fort Recovery outscored Ansonia 10-0 in the third quarter, and held the Tigers to 1-of-18 shooting (5.6 percent) in the second half and 16 percent overall.

Sam Staugler added 10 points for the Tribe, and Lauren Wenning scored nine. Jill Pottkotter grabbed 10 boards to lead a 39-13 rebounding advantage.

Sandra Sudhoff dished out four assists, and Staugler and Brittany Brackman had three steals each.

Molly Wentworth had six points for Ansonia, and Courtney Swabb grabbed five rebounds. Hayley Kiser notched four points and four rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
