What was council thinking?
Editorial
What did they think they were doing?
Did they think no one would find out?
Did they think at all?
The town of Redkey has been tussling for years with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management over needed improvements to the town’s sewers and wastewater treatment system.
Town officials have kicked the can down the road for a long, long time, and IDEM’s patience is nearly exhausted.
The state has threatened fines, but few people in town government have taken those threats seriously.
So one would think that when a fine was actually handed down, it would be a wake-up call.
Instead, it didn’t even merit public discussion by the town council.
Ever so quietly, apparently hoping no one would notice, payment of the $2,800 fine was buried in a stack of claims approved by the council last month.
Notice of the fine has been in the town’s hands since October.
The town council now says it’s serious about addressing the combined sewer overflow problems. It has applied for a planning grant and has raised sewer rates to help pay for the needed work.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that the council seriously undermines its credibility when it doesn’t play straight with the public. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
