Where's the justice? (9/9/05)

Letters to the Editor

By To the editor:-

In the United States of America all citizens enjoy equal protection under the law. What that means is that regardless of who you are or what your past might be, you have the comfort of knowing that if you are the victim of a crime, the person(s) who perpetrated said crime will be brought to justice.

Apparently, that isn’t the case in Jay County. Recently, a young Portland man was involved in what could have been a very deadly situation when two allegedly armed men entered his domicile and threatened him. Luckily for him he turned the tables on his attackers and the case resulted in a self-defense shooting.

However, justice still hasn’t been served and it is time it was. The two who perpetrated the incident are essentially walking around free.

The reason? The prosecutor’s office claims that no crimes were committed by these two men. Really? How about assault with a deadly weapon, trespass, breaking and entering? If they had any predisposed intent on harming this person and a plan to carry it out — attempted murder.

I am appalled that the prosecutor’s office is sitting around doing nothing in this case. I believe it is time these two get what they deserve.

A concerned citizen.
