Whitacre event is set
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
The fifth annual fundraiser for the Lance Cpl. Andrew F. Whitacre Fund will be held June 15. Once again we will be having a ride of approximately 100 miles. We will be serving one of Andrew’s favorites, chili dogs, along with chips, slaw and brownies, and we will be having an auction at 6 p.m.
We have been raising money for the troops since 2007, when Andrew and his unit were deployed to Iraq in January. At that time, several of the parents of the Marines would take a week and send packages to the guys. Our friends at the campground helped us to have a rummage sale; we also sold candles and crafts. We were able to send 99 packages to Iraq with the proceeds.
Andrew will be gone five years in June and we continue to raise money to support and honor the troops. We are proud to support Wounded Warriors, the USO, and Lemonade 4 Soldiers, just to mention a few. All of the money raised goes into the memorial fund. We will continue to do this as long as we can to make sure “they are not forgotten.”
We would appreciate any support you could provide We can use merchandise or gift certificates for the auction and door prizes. Or if you prefer, make a monetary donation.
This is a busy time of the year, so if you can’t make the ride, join us for supper starting at 4:30 p.m. for $5 per person at the Portland Moose Lodge.
We would also like to take this opportunity to send packages to the troops. If you know someone that is deployed, please send their complete name, rank and address to us at 7758 E. Ind. 67, Bryant, IN, 47326.
Thank you for your support.

To the editor:
We would like to thank everyone for your support of the Jay/Adams Benefit Chicken dinner on April 21. This year, $5,860 was raised for local food banks, with $1,600 coming from Thrivent Financial. We would especially like to thank Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Zion Lutheran Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church for serving the meals.
From these three locations, 960 meals were served.
We would also like to thank Fisher Packing of Portland and M&M Market, Geneval, for preparing all the food.
We would like to thank the following churches for your help in selling tickets for this ministry. In Geneva — High Street Methodist, First United Methodist and St. Mary’s Catholic. In Portland — First Presbyterian, Fellowship Baptist, Asbury United Methodist, Immaculate Conception, Zion Lutheran and West Walnut Street Church of Christ. In Bryant — Bryant Wesleyan, Union Chapel, Westchester United Methodist, New Corydon Bible Church, Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Redeemer Lutheran.
If your church would like to be involved in this ministry next year, please contact Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Thank you.
