Why are prices so high here? (10/2/03)

By To the editor:-
My wife and I moved to this community over 20 years ago and have decided to remain here even after retirement. We also have brought our two children and their families here, along with our nine grandchildren.
We all enjoy the area, the political climate, the friendliness, the weather, our neighbors and even the tax rates. We have lived in a lot of difference states over the years, and this is now our home.
One thing we do not like, however, is the exorbitant amount that gas costs in Portland! Today we went to Muncie and paid $1.38 a gallon, and the price in Portland was $1.55 at the Village Pantry. This, we have found is typical, so our family and we chose to purchase our gas in Muncie. And while we do that, we also end up doing 95 percent of our other shopping there along with dining and entertainment. We, apparently, are not alone because we see a lot of other Portland people there doing the same thing, and a lot of them tell us that it started because of the high gas prices at home.
If Portland is to continue to grow and prosper then Portland businesses need to treat their customers like they need their business; like they know if they don’t they will drive their customers to Muncie. There the prices are cheaper and people are friendlier and treat you like your business is appreciated.
The price of a smile and common courtesy is not included in high prices we find in Portland. Don’t tell us to shop in Portland until you tell Portland how to treat their people.
