Why the fuss over DST? (4/14/05)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

Listen. Hear that rumbling in the distance? That’s the sound of economic prosperity headed Indiana’s way now that Daylight Saving Time appears to be a reality. In addition, with the movement underway in Congress on each end to DST, I’m afraid we may have more prosperity on the way than we can deal with.

Now we still have to work out the details on whether we are on Central or Eastern time, but that’s minor, because just the fact we have it will bring a boom.

I hope we go with Central. That way we will never be on the same time as Ohio, Michigan or (parts of) Kentucky. The folks in northwest Indiana will be happy, though, because they will be with Chicago. The folks in that area are more important than you and I anyway, so long as they are satisfied. Does anyone remember who got to keep the 219 area code? Oh, I forgot, they did that with a drawing. Right!

There is an additional bonus to DST, too. Many of the kids who ride a bus can stand and wait in the dark almost all year.

That rumbling I mentioned in the beginning I just figured out was my stomach.

I got so excited about all the wonderful things about Daylight Saving Time I forgot to eat lunch.
