Tie for town board in Salamonia
Tuesday’s election for Salamonia Town Council won’t be decided until January.
Two candidates tied for one of the seats on the council, and the election can’t formally be decided until the other two members of the council are sworn into office.
Eight candidates had been in the running for the three at-large council seats.
Incumbents Gloria Pfeifer and Emily Daugherty won re-election Tuesday.
But the race for the third seat ended as a tie between incumbent Donna Shreeve and independent Charles “Stan” Keen.
Final vote totals showed Pfeifer with 26 votes, Daugherty with 21, Shreeve and Keen with 20 each, Bruce Smith with 11, Perry Jones with 8, Donald Shauver with 7, and Gale Ross with 4.
Jay County Clerk Jane Ann Runyon checked Indiana election law Tuesday night to determine how the tie-vote is to be resolved. She then double-checked with state election authorities today. It is still possible for either of the candidates to seek a recount.
Incumbent Salamonia Clerk-Treasurer Connie Southworth was unopposed for re-election.
There was also a tie in the election for Bryant Town Council, but it won’t make any difference in the outcome.
Republicans Terry L. Billington, Jason Elzey, and Leo Kahn were elected to fill three seats on the council. Billington received 50 votes, while Elzey and Kahn received 42 each. The fourth candidate on the ballot, Democrat Rick Elzey, received 35 votes.
In the race for Bryant clerk-treasurer, Democrat Lisa Elzey narrowly defeated Republican Michele Brinkerhoff by a vote of 31-27.
Geneva voters overwhelmingly re-elected two incumbent Republican members of the town council Tuesday. Mike Schwartz defeated Democratic challenger Jack Kaiser by a vote of 200-57, while Jim Timmons defeated Democratic challenger Skeeter Shepherd 202-51.
Lew Wingler was unopposed for the third seat on the Geneva Town Council, as was incumbent Clerk-Treasurer Doug Milligan.[[In-content Ad]]
