Winter off to a strong start
Rays of Insight
The fall season saw two sectional titles for Jay County and two for South Adams high schools.
The Starfire cross country team advanced all the way to the state finals, as did SAHS sophomore golfer Sydney Willis. And Fort Recovery senior Elle Sutter closed her cross country career with a trip to the state meet.
It was a great way to open the 2013-14 school year. And many of the winter sports teams have gotten off to a strong start in an effort to continue that success.
Perhaps no team ...
... entered the year with higher expectations than the JCHS girls swim team.
The Patriots returned all five swimmers who competed at the state finals last season, including medalist Anne Vormohr. Their goals: an undefeated dual-meet season and the first sectional title in school history.
Jay County has been unchallenged in dual meets thus far, and both Sophie Bader and Vormohr have alread turned in record-breaking performances.
Though the FRHS ...
... girls basketball team returned its leading scorer, but lost its next two best offensive weapons to graduation. That didn’t slow the Indians down much in the first quarter of their season.
The Tribe won its first four games before falling to unbeaten Marion Local.
Tori Lennartz has led the way for the Indians, averaging 16.5 points per game including a pair of 21-point efforts. The team has also gotten key contributions from Kara Jutte, Kendra Siefring, Sierra Pugh and Caley Schoenherr as it seeks to earn a sectional title after having its streak of four straight championships broken last year.
In terms of losing ...
... key players, no group was hit harder by graduation than the Jay County boys basketball team.
Three of its 2012-13 starters are playing collegiately. But the Patriots have responded well.
JCHS is 3-1, and would most likely be 4-0 if not for an injury that has kept senior Trey Teagle off the court thus far. It has played two overtime games — one a thrilling win in the season opener and the other a double-overtime defeat to Bluffton.
Certainly the schedule will get more difficult for the Patriots as the season goes on. But so far, so good.[[In-content Ad]]
