Taking note
West Jay Middle School in Dunkirk announced its students of the month for September.
Sixth grader Brooke Byers, daughter of Ron and Anne Byers, seventh grader Sarah Myers, daughter of David and Robin Myers and eighth grader Sarah Garringer, daughter of Wade and Sarah Garringer were all named students of month.
LIBRARY EVENTS
There will be a Halloween Story Time on Friday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Jay County Public Library. Children are encouraged to dress in costumes. The event will feature stories, a craft and a treat.

IN CONCERT
A celebration concert with Debbie Myers will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 402 N. Ship St. in Portland.
NEW STAFF MEMBERS
The Girl Scouts of Wapehani Council recently announced two new member to the Council Staff.
Nick Cross is the new manager of communications and fund development. A native of Frankfort, Ohio, he graduated from Taylor University in 2003 with a degree in social work.
He then earned his master’s degree in social work from Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.
April Smith is the new membership field executive covering Madison, Tipton and Randolph Counties.
She is a native of East Moline, Ill. and graduated from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/ criminology and a master’s degree in public administration.
RETIRED TEACHERS
The Jay County Retired Teachers met on Oct. 11 at Mom’s Cafe in Geneva, with 34 members and guests present.
Fran Austin later took them on a tour of the Gene Stratton -Porter cabin at the Limberlost State Historic Site.
ANNIVERSARY
East Central Indiana’s Center for Natural and Cultural Heritage and Cardinal Health System are teaming up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
A display that will chronicle the life of the hospital and its relation to the community from 1929 to the present and on to the future will be at Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie from Saturday, Oct. 30, through January of 2005.
