Woman caught in the act of kindness (12/05/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

While sitting at a stop light in downtown Portland today (Dec. 1), I witnessed an act of kindness that I would like for people in our community to know about.

It was blowing snow, the temperature had dropped, and it was possibly the windiest day of the year. As I sat in my car at the light, I saw one of our local merchants helping a customer out of her store and in to her car. She supported her in the wind, opened her car door and helped her into the car.

I doubt that you would get this kind of assistance at shopping malls or from store owners who you do not know.

We are very lucky to live in this great community and are lucky to have store owners such as Sandy Schwieterman at Evan's Fine Jewelry.

Respectfully,

Deb Tipton

Auction thanks

To the editor:

On Saturday, the Jay County Cancer Society held its third annual Homemade Holiday Auction. This event was again held at General Shanks Elementary School.

The auction this year included homemade items along with gift certificates and merchandise from local merchants.

Over 800 items were donated by area residents, organizations, clubs and daycares, along with donations from area merchants. From this, more than $4,500 was raised to assist Jay County cancer patients.

We would like to thank all of the people who took the time to make and donate the wonderful homemade items. We had everything from hand-painted glass ornaments, wreaths and Christmas apropns to homemade food items.

We would also like to thank all of the generous merchants who donated products and gift certificates.

Also a big thank you to Gary, Kim, Doug and Aaron Loy, Missy Puterbaugh, Tracy Leonhard and Randy Mann (all of Loy Auction and Realty) who donated their services to make the auction a big success. Thank you to Tim DeVoss, the janitor at General Shanks, who helped us tremendously.

And of course, thank you to all of those who attended the auction. Your generous bids made the evening a huge success.

Mark your calendar and be sure to attend the Walk against Cancer in June 2007 and the Homemade Holiday Auction in December.

Thank you again to all who contributed.
