Portland Planning Commission
By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-
A local board will meet next week to discuss revisions to a plan for the city's future.
Members of the Portland City Council were encouraged Monday night to attend a Portland Planning Commission meeting to give input on the city's comprehensive plan. The commission meeting will be held April 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Portland Fire Station meeting room.
"The plan is a road map to the future for zoning and planning," Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier said this morning.
As part of the plan revisions, commission members will discuss the city's future land use and growth maps.
The comprehensive plan was last updated in 2003.
Vicki Tague, president of the Portland Planning Commission, said this morning that the plan needs to be updated periodically. There is no specific reason for why it is being updated now, she said. It is the commission's responsibility to make sure the plan is current.
Also Monday, council members were updated on the replacement of a storm sewer line.
The line has been put in place along the east side of the Weiler Building, said Bob Brelsford, superintendent of the Portland Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The new line is replacing an older line. Storm water was backing up and going in the basement.
Also Monday, council members:
•Heard Jeff Harker, street and park department superintendent, say that he recently got a request for a street light to be installed along Adams Street, which runs between Meridian and Wayne streets on the north side of the city.
Harker said the street is very dark at night. He said council members could address the matter at a future meeting. None of the council members commented.
•Learned that most of the water utility work on the Industrial Park Drive project has been completed.
The city water department had to relocate some fire hydrants before the street project gets underway.
The Portland Redevelopment Commission project will widen the street to three lanes and relocate a lift station.
•Learned that the city's spring clean-up week will be April 9-13.
Harker said furniture, brush, appliances and vehicle batteries will be collected. Tires and hazardous materials will not. The items should be put out for collection with regular trash.
Harker also said Monday that trash will not be collected in the city on Friday because it is Good Friday. Trash that is normally picked up on Friday will be collected on Thursday. Recycling will be picked up as usual, he said.
City hall and all city departments will be closed on Friday.
•Were invited by Hosier to attend a Mayor's Roundtable.
The event will take place April 13 at 11:45 a.m. at the Portland Golf Club, 124 West 200 South. Mayors from throughout the state are expected to attend.[[In-content Ad]]
