Work progresses on new SA school (09/10/2008)
South Adams School Board

BERNE - Work on the new South Adams kindergarten through grade eight facility is running ahead of schedule, and structural steel should start arriving at the work site next week.
School board members learned Tuesday that the concrete block wall for the gymnasium of the new school is 90 percent complete.
Superintendent Cathy Egolf repeated her invitation for community members to tour the work site - directly east of South Adams Junior-Senior High School - at 4 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month.
The next tour date is Thursday, Oct. 2.
"We'd love to have you come out," said Egolf. The hardhat tours are limited to the first 25 people who show up. "We only have 25 hardhats," Egolf said.
Once the structural steel is in place, the roof can go on. And once the shell of the building takes shape, crews doing the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work can move in.
Board members also learned that concrete for the pool renovation is still curing, though some tiling could begin this week.
Looking toward the future, new South Adams baseball coach Brad Buckingham outlined a proposed long-range plan for improvements at the high school baseball diamond.
"I want to give our kids the best experience they can possibly have," said Buckingham.
The plans, which were not submitted for board action, would call for replacing the backstop, dugouts, foul line fencing, outfield fencing, and press box.
Eventually, Buckingham would like to see a concrete pad extending from dugout to dugout, providing greater handicapped accessibility for spectators, and lighting for the field to allow for more doubleheaders, a move which would reduce travel expenses.
The first phase of improvements - a 20 by 20 storage building to be constructed by the high school's building trades students - won unanimous board approval Tuesday.
Cost of the materials for the building will be $5,639.91 and will be paid by revenues from summer baseball camps and a donation from Berne Youth Baseball, Buckingham said.
In other business, the board:
•Hired Adam Zimmerman as assistant boys' soccer coach, pending a background check.
•Appointed Carolyn Fletcher to the Berne Public Library Board to fill a vacancy.
•Hired two instructional aides for the migrant education program.[[In-content Ad]]
