Wrong location

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I realize there have already been several interesting letters printed about Portland’s forthcoming Wal-Mart Supercenter. As a small business owner I do have some personal opinions and concerns, but no one has addressed the obvious one: The planned location in regards to traffic and our local emergency services.

The traffic congestion near the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Muncie is horrid. Imagine such congestion near our hospital or hampering the route of the fire engines on Industrial (Park) Drive.

As a business owner I have concerns about Wal-Mart and its marketing strategy. Wal-Mart has its slick “pro community” commercials, but the recent lawsuits against our nation’s largest retailer seem to tarnish them.

Do I shop Wal-Mart personally? Yes I do. I buy all my household cleaning supplies there. Why pay more someplace else?

Will I buy produce at our new supercenter? Yes I will. Portland needs another grocery for selection and variety of produce available locally without driving to Muncie to find it.

I just don’t want the new supercenter built where they plan to build it. The traffic congestion will most certainly delay our local emergency services. No one seems to have mentioned this situation previously, so I thought I should voice my concern now.
