Zoeller's common sense proposal
Some things are just a matter of common sense.
Like the standard business practice of requiring two signatures on any checks.
But under current Indiana law, that same rule of common sense doesn’t apply to offices of government.
Attorney General Greg Zoeller would like to change that. Zoeller, who was in East Central Indiana to file suit against a former Randolph County school treasurer accused of misappropriating funds, thinks smarter business practices would go a long way toward protecting the public’s interests. Zoeller will be pushing in the 2012 session of the Indiana General Assembly to have legislation passed that would require dual signatures from employees in a government office when authorizing expenditures of public funds.
It’s a piece of legislation that’s long overdue and should win bipartisan approval, even in a Statehouse that’s been bitterly divided over the past few years.
In the case of the Randolph County funds, it’s closing the barn door after the horse is already on the loose. But at least the door will be closed. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
