Zoning exception gains board's OK (10/12/05)
Portland Board of Zoning Appeals

The Portland Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception request Tuesday evening, allowing a Portland business to move west and expand.
The special exception request by Kent and Bonita Hampson, 5051 East 200 North, Portland, for a flower shop on a lot zoned agricultural was approved. The Hampsons plan to move Beyond the Gilded Willow, 404 W. Votaw St., Portland, to 1346 West Ind. 67, Portland.
Only board members Vicki Tague, Betty Miller and Susan Schutz attended Tuesday’s meeting. All three approved the special exception request.
Hampson said she and her husband plan to move the business to the existing 3,000 square-foot house and close the shop on Votaw Street. They hope to begin renovating the house in mid-March and have it completed and open by July.
The couple also plans to create meeting rooms in the house for social gatherings and for organizations to use. Once the renovations to the house are complete, they plan to transform the existing barn into a reception hall. When the barn is not being used for a party, the Hampsons hope to have pumpkin painting and carving, and other hands-on demonstrations there.
They also want to create flower gardens for the backdrops of weddings, and grow Indian corn, pumpkins, apples and gourds to sell.
Before the board voted, Jay/Portland Building and Planning administrator Bill Milligan said he has not received any written or verbal opposition to the Hampsons’ request from neighboring businesses or property owners.
Milligan said the Portland Zoning Ordinance allows reception halls as part of a special exception.[[In-content Ad]]
