Zoning request OK'd
Advisory board recommends chance to commercial zoning
PORTLAND — A request to re-zone property southwest of Portland for a car dealership and other commercial operations was approved in about 10 minutes by a local zoning advisory board Thursday.
Members of the Jay County Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend approving a request from Ken Brinkerhoff to re-zone 3.4 acres to commercial status. The request will be taken to Jay County Commissioners for final action.
The property, located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Ind. 67 and county road 200 South, is currently zoned as agricultural/residential.
Brinkerhoff plans to operate a used car dealership, an auto detailing business, a craft shop and storage units.
The site formerly housed a small motel and a retail lawn ornament shop.
It was grandfathered in as an existing use when zoning was adopted in the early 1990s.
Brinkerhoff plans to convert the former motel rooms into storage units. A barn located behind a home just west of the former motel building will be used for the auto detailing business.
Members of the planning commission at Thursday’s meeting were Shane Houck, Scott Hilfiker, Don Loy, John Knipp, Brad Daniels, Gary Theurer, Todd Wickey and Jim Zimmerman.
