Hospital works to stay prepared

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa and the subsequent infection of U.S. residents continues to prompt questions and concerns among our patients, their families and our team members.
Please be assured that Jay County Hospital, JCH Healthcare providers and the Jay County Health Department are working together to protect our patients, their families and our team members from the threat of infectious disease with early identification and containment. We have action plans in place for the Ebola virus, and are in regular contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Indiana State Department of Health and our healthcare colleagues to ensure we are following the latest recommendations and protocols.
Specifically, we are:
•Ensuring the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available to our team members so they have what they need to protect themselves as they provide care to patients.
•Identifying and preparing appropriate isolation areas to safely treat patients.
•Establishing training for those team members who may be part of care teams for patients in isolation.
•Participating in trainings and exercises led by the CDC and other groups.

What to do if you think you have Ebola?
If you have reason to believe you may have EVD (you have recently been to West Africa or have been exposed to someone with the Ebola virus and have a fever of 100.4 or greater, along with symptoms such as severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding)), remain at home and contact your medical provider or the emergency department at (260) 726-1822 for further instructions.

More information about Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)
To better protect our community, it is important to know facts about EVD transmission, identification and recommended precautions. More information on EVD may be found at http://www.cdc.org and https://secure.in.gov/isdh, or by contacting the local health department at 260-726-8080.

Jay County Hospital, JCH Healthcare Providers and Jay County Health Department are here to protect and care for you and your family.
Thank you,
Mark Haggenjos, DO
