Voters set to make choices
The citizens of Jay County have already selected their next sheriff.
By Tuesday evening, they will have chosen a new commissioner and auditor as well.
Those are just two on a list of local elected offices that Jay County voters will weigh in on when they take to the polls Tuesday. Voting hours run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The county will have a new commissioner representing the middle district after Doug Inman defeated six-term incumbent Milo Miller Jr. in the Republican primary. Inman is squaring off against Democrat Randy Mann.
And with auditor Nancy Culy having fulfilled her limit of two consecutive terms, three candidates are vying to fill that position. Republican Anna Culy, Nancy’s daughter and first deputy, went unchallenged in the primary, but is now in a three-woman race against Democrat Susan Bunch and independent Missy Puterbaugh.
The race for prosecutor is a rematch from 2010 as incumbent Democrat Wes Schemenaur faces a challenge from Republican Greg LeMaster. Schemenaur, who turned back a challenge from Jill Gonzalez in the primary, won in his first try for office 3,210-2,422 over LeMaster.
In other county-wide races, incumbent Republican county councilman Mike Rockwell is facing off against Democrat Josh Gibson, and former two-time recorder Betty St. Myers is running against Democrat Kari Tressler.
Five candidates are seeking two seats on Redkey Town Council, with Republican David Dudelston seeking to reclaim his position while Jon Davis chose not to try for another term. Other candidates are Democrat former town councilman James “Watermellon Jim” Phillips, independent Mike Wright, Republican Ryan D. Wolford and Democrat Charles D. Coons. The top two vote getters will earn seats on council.
Greg Beumer, who was selected by a Republican caucus in November 2013 to complete the term of District 33 state representative Bill Davis following his resignation, is facing two challengers in his first general election as an incumbent. The Republican will square off against Democrat Shon Byrum and Libertarian Zeb Sutton.
In the races for other state offices, are Republican Connie Lawson, Democrat Elizabeth “Beth” White and Libertarian Karl Tatgenhorst for secretary of state, Republican Suzanne Crouch, Democrat Michael A. Claytor and Libertarian John Schick for state auditor and Republican Kelly Mitchell, Democrat Mike Boland and Libertarian Michael L. Jasper for state treasurer.
U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman has two challengers in the race to represent District 3, which includes Jay County. The Republican will take on Democrat Justin Kuhnle and Libertarian Scott Wise.
There are also public questions regarding the retention of Indiana Supreme Court Justices Loretta H. Rush and Mark S. Massa, Fourth District Court of Appeals Judge Rudolph Reginald Pyle III and Tax Court Judge Martha Wentworth.
Other contested races in Jay County include Republican Alicia Corwin against Democrat Michael Grile for Pennville Town Board’s south district seat, and Republican Joe Gutshall against Democrat Marge Zigler for Knox Township Trustee.
