Officer promises to help veterans
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Veterans Day is quickly approaching.
And as the recently-hired Jay County Veterans Service Officer I would like to thank each military veteran for their services to our country and to wish them well on this upcoming Veterans Day.
During my short tenure as Veterans Service Officer, and after attending my first training seminar, I am more aware than ever that I have much to learn about the benefits and programs that are available to our veterans through the Veterans Affairs Administration (VA).
Veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War visit my office on a daily basis, but I have only had two veterans from the Gulf War and no veterans for the War on Terrorism visit my office to see what benefits might be available to them.
All veterans upon discharge from military service should do two things.
The first is to take your DD 214, also known as your discharge/separation paper, and get it recorded at the recorder’s office in the courthouse. It will cost you nothing.
The second thing all veterans need to do is enroll in the VA System. You may not need to use any benefits that are available to you at this time, but there will come a time when you might need them.
With patience and being persistent I will strive to help you, the veteran, receive all the benefits you are entitled to.
