Moore cuts time at national championships

Hannah Moore made her second trip to the national championships Saturday, this time as individual. She improved her time by more than 30 seconds.
The 2012 South Adams High School graduate and Huntington University senior led a group of three area athletes who competed Saturday in the NAIA Cross Country National Championships at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan. Also running Saturday were Dylan Cope (Jay County – 2013) and Tim Lehman (South Adams – 2012).
Moore finished in the top half of the field of 336 runners in the women’s race as she finished 144th. She posted a time of 19 minutes, 43.5 seconds in the 5K race.
Her time was 36 seconds faster than during her freshman season, when she helped lead the Foresters to a 20th-place finish.
Cope, who was competing as an individual for Indiana University East, crossed the finish line in 224th place. He had a time of 27:29.9 in the 8K event.
Lehman, who qualified as a member of the Goshen College squad, ran the No. 6 time for the Maple Leafs. He finished in 27:52.2 for 247th place while his team finished 27th.

Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Turned in back-to-back 20-point games to lead the NAIA No. 15 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team to the title at the Marion University Classic.
Comer, who is averaging 18.8 points per game, shot 60 percent from the field and went 10-of-13 from the line Saturday in the Cougars’ 86-70 win over Miami-Middletown in the championship game. He also had four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.
The sophomore totaled 21 points, five assists, two steals, one block and one rebound as USF (8-1) won 79-65 Friday over Holy Cross in the opening round of the tournament.

Josh Lykins
Jay County – 2014
Earned a second NAIA national cut as an individual, helping the Lindsey Wilson College men’s swim to a second place finish Saturday in the Brenau (Ga.) University Invitational.
The Blue Raiders’ 840 points was second behind Savanna (Ga.) College of Art and Design’s 938 points.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Lykins touched the wall in 2 minutes, 0.64 seconds. He shaved more than 10 seconds off his time from Oct. 30 to earn a national “A” cut.
The Blue Raider freshman also lowered his 100 butterfly time by more than a second, touching the wall second in 53.31 seconds and improving on his “B” standard.

Neal Fennig
Jay County – 2011
Competed for the Ball State University men’s swim team as it lost to 836-636 to visiting Grand Valley State in the Douglas A. Coers Invitational, which concluded Saturday.
Fennig’s top individual finish came in the 100-yard freestyle as he placed fifth in 49.1 seconds. He was also eight in the 200 freestyle and ninth in the 500 freestyle.
The senior teamed with Cole Smith, Joe Morris and Austin Green for the runner-up spot with a time of 3:11.94 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Elijah Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2014
Notched a season-high six points in the Division II No. 16 University of Findlay men’s basketball team’s 63-54 loss to 10th ranked Bellarmine on Sunday.
The freshman was 2-of-5 from the field, all 3-pointers, in 24 minutes off the bench for the Oilers (1-1). He also added a pair of rebounds in his second collegiate game.

Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Played Thursday for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team as it fell 83-62 to NCAA Division II No. 17 Lewis.
Gelhaus grabbed a couple of rebounds for the Cardinals. The loss dropped SVSU to 1-2 on the year.

Holly Brunswick
Fort Recovery – 2011
Got in the game Saturday for the Ohio Dominican University womn’s basketball team in its 74-48 victory over St. Joseph’s.
Brunswick saw three minutes of action for the Panthers. The victory evened ODU’s record at 2-2.
