Area Halloween events kick off today with Halloween Happening at Jay County Public Library.
While trick-or-treating in most cities and towns is scheduled for Friday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at JCPL, 315 N. Ship St., Portland, children and parents are invited to dress in costume and participate in Halloween-themed activities, including a haunted house, crafts and cookies to decorate.
Halloween activities in Geneva follows on Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The town is hosting a Haunted Downtown Geneva event with trick-or-treat until 7 p.m.
Trick-or-treating in Portland, Dunkirk, Pennville, Bryant, Ridgeville and Salamonia will be held Friday.
Portland’s trick-or-treat hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and will coincide with Jay County Chamber of Commerce’s Merchant Trick-or-Treat Night.
Maps for the event, which will be held in downtown Portland, can be picked up at Community Resource Center, 118 S. Meridian St., Portland.
Redkey’s Halloween costume parade will start at 5:30 p.m., with line up at 5:15 p.m. by the fire station. Trick-or-treating will follow from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pennville’s trick-or-treat hours are also 6 to 8 p.m., and Bryant’s are 5 to 8 p.m. Pennville residents who welcome Halloween visitors are asked to turn their porch lights on.
Dunkirk’s trick-or-treat event is from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with a rain date set for Saturday. Treat bags will be given out from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Dunkirk Elks Lodge, 1026 S. Main St.
And the Dunkirk Fire Department is hosting a haunted woods from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday on county road 450 South between county roads 1100 West and 1150 West.
Admission is $7, but event-goers who donate a canned good will get a $1 discount.
Weather for Halloween is expected to be chilly and wet with Friday’s high temperature forecast at just 45 degrees with a 60-percent chance of rain. A snow shower is possible Friday night as the low dips to about 29 degrees.
