Police academy is recommended
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I wish to thank Portland Police Chief Nathan Springer and the Portland Police Department for the 2014 Portland Citizens Police Academy.
I have the honor of being a 2014 graduate.
I would encourage any individual who wants to learn more about our police department to attend the next academy.
I did not know what to expect when I signed up for the class. We learned so much about how our police department operates and what officers face on a daily basis.
We learned about the history of the police department, its present officers, laws and prosecution, drugs, investigations, defense tactics, guns and gun safety, chaplains and about available community resources. We witnessed an officer being tased so we could learn more about tasers and their effects. We rode along with an officer to experience what they encounter daily.
We also had the opportunity to tour the jail, which was awesome to learn about.
If you would like to learn more or attend the next Portland Citizens Police Academy, I encourage you to contact Chief Springer at the police department.

Thank you
To the editor:
On behalf of the Portland Lions Club and the Jay County FFA, we would like to thank all those who helped with the fundraiser last week at the Portland Lions Club Civic Center.
Once again Jay County showed why people love to live, work and play here. Over 50 community members came together and helped one of Jay County’s own.
A special thanks to our sponsors who were able to cut overall costs of the event. This includes: Jay County FFA, Clear Choice Chiropractic, Heavy Smoker’s BBQ, Minnich Poultry and WPGW Radio 100.9 FM/1440 AM. We would also like to thank Holy Trinity Church, Richards Restaurant and Pioneer Packaging for providing all desserts.
Also, thank you to all the community members that came out and supported the dinner, this truly could not have been such a success without everyone’s generosity.
The next tenderloin dinner will be held at Portland Lions Club Civic Center from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 15 in support of Jay County Humane Society.
Hope to see you all there.
