Dunkirk community will rebound

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
Deep into my third year as mayor of Dunkirk, I have faced many disappointments as I try to lead this city through difficult times.
We have seen a rise in foreclosures and vacant homes, rampant drug use and lack of funding for services, all of which numerous rural communities in Indiana are facing.
The last week has dealt the citizens of our community another devastating blow.
Record rainfall last Thursday and Friday led to unprecedented flooding throughout our small community. Many businesses and residents were deeply affected with damage to property as well as mental anguish.
Insurance will not cover much of the damage. The infrastructure of the city itself was greatly taxed. The new sewage plant upgrades were put to the maximum test. The water plant suffered lightning damage. City hall experienced flooding in the basement, which will lead to several thousand dollars in damage.
These are all minor compared to the damage the citizens have faced in our community. Thankfully, no injuries or deaths resulted from this devastating event.
Yesterday, we received word no one wanted to hear.
The remains of one of our own, missing almost three months, were discovered in rural Jay County.

This tragic event has brought many in our community together, praying for the family of Brianna DiBattiste and her parents.
This past week has personally taken its toll as I knew many of the residents affected by the flooding as well as Brianna and her family.
I thank all of the city administration and employees for all that they have done to help the city as we try to move past these recent events.
Now, more than ever, we need the support and prayers of the residents of Dunkirk and Jay County.
One thing I have learned in the 25 years I have been back in Jay County is that when one community is suffering, the entire Jay County community feels their pain.
I have confidence that we will rebound and will continue to provide the best we can for the residents of this “close knit” community that we all call home.
With a heavy heart,
Dan Watson
Mayor of Dunkirk
