Stars blow out Tigers
BERNE — South Adams was in control Friday night before its football game against the Bluffton Tigers was postponed because of lightning three plays into the third quarter.
When the game was resumed Saturday morning, the Starfires picked up where they left off.
Already leading 28-6, South Adams (1-2, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored two more touchdowns Saturday en route to a 42-14 victory over the visiting Tigers (1-2, 0-1 ACAC) to get its first win of the season.
Isaiah Amstutz scored on a 29-yard run just 28 seconds after play resumed with 11:11 left in the third period. Skylar Schoch reached the end zone for his third touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a 16-yard pass from Derek Wanner.
D’Wayne Eskridge accounted for 235 of Bluffton’s 372 yards of total offense, carrying the ball 18 times for 227 yards and reeling in two of Jacob Wenger’s passes for eight yards.
Eskridge scored both touchdowns for the Tigers, once in the first quarter on a 43-yard run and again on a 72-yard scamper in the third.
Despite giving up nearly 400 yards, South Adams forced Bluffton to turn the ball over on downs six times as the Tigers only converted three fourth-down attempts.
Bluffton was also 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) on third down.
Schoch led South Adams with 141 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, including a 68-yard tear as time expired in the opening quarter. He also caught two passes from Wanner, who threw for 117 yards on 6-of-7 passing.
Wanner, a senior, added 18 carries for 61 yards, as the Starfires racked up 328 total rushing yards.
Drew LeFever also scored twice while rushing 15 times for 94 yards.
South Adams will travel to Leo at 7 p.m. Friday to take on the Lions (2-1, 1-0 ACAC), the four-time defending conference champions.
