Anna tops Fort Recovery, 34-20
FRHS football
ANNA, Ohio — For 24 minutes, the Indians seemed to be headed for their first 3-0 start since 2000. But the second half belonged to Anna.
Fort Recovery High School’s football team was outscored 21-0 after the intermission Friday as it fell 34-20 to the host Rockets.
Anna evened the game at 20 on a Grant Glover TD reception from Ryan Counts midway through the third quarter, and pulled ahead when Erik Bensman returned a Darien Sheffer punt 38 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the fourth.
The Tribe then turned the ball over on a fumble deep in Rockets’ territory, and the home team proceeded to eat nearly six minutes off the clock on a 14-play scoring drive that iced the game.
Fort Recovery’s final drive ended with an interception.
The Indians (2-1, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) had looked strong in the first half, grabbing the lead on a Cole Hull touchdown run. And after stopping Anna on a fourth-and-2 play with 4:31 left in the opening half, they marched down the field to extend their advantage.
A Kyle Schroer 14-yard run pushed FRHS into Rockets’ territory, and Cole Hull added back-to-back 16- and 6-yard runs to give the Tribe a first down at the 29-yard line. That was close enough for sophomore quarterback Caleb Martin, who hit Wes Wenning with a touchdown pass on the next play to put Fort Recovery up 20-13.
But the Tribe’s second-half possessions ended with four punts, a turnover on downs, a fumble and the late interception.
Counts was efficient through the air for Anna, going 11-of-15 for 223 yards. Glover caught six of those passes for 153 yards, and Christiaan Williams ran 24 times for 117 yards.
Martin was 15-of-25 passing for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Wenning and Sheffer each caught four passes, and Evan Schoen had two receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. Hull ran 18 times for 95 yards.
Fort Recovery has won its first two games in five straight seasons, but hasn’t opened with three consecutive victories since topping National Trail (44-0), Lima Central Catholic (36-0) and Wayne Trace (32-20) in 2000.
