Stars' win slips away

SAHS football

MONROEVILLE — A score late in the third quarter put the Starfires ahead against host Heritage.
But they couldn’t answer after falling behind again in the final period.
The South Adams High School football team gave up the lead 45 seconds into the final period Friday as it slipped to 1-3 with a 22-19 loss to the Patriots.
The Starfires stayed stride-for-stride with Heritage (3-1), whose lone loss came by a 31-21 score to Class 4A No. 7 New Haven, taking the lead when quarterback Derek Wanner scored on a 5-yard run with 3:11 to play in the third quarter.
But Heritage answered back, with Branson Dossen reaching the end zone on a 15-yard run early in the fourth.
South Adams couldn’t mount another scoring drive as it slipped to 1-1 in the Allen County Athletic Conference after trampling Bluffton 42-14 a week earlier.
The Starfires fell behind early when Jordan Freeman found paydirt on a 14-yard run just 28 seconds into the game and Austin Conrad tacked on a 2-point conversion.
A Wanner TD run closed the gap to 8-6, but Derek Brinkman recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown to give Heritage a 15-6 lead midway through the second quarter.
Skylar Schoch reached the end zone for SAHS on a 3-yard run with 1:49 left in the opening half, and Wanner’s second TD of the night gave the visitors the lead before Heritage scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter.
Yardage numbers were nearly even, as the Starfires gained 243 yards compared to 266 for Heritage.
Wanner paced South Adams with 72 rushing yards on 12 attempts, and also completed 10 passes for 82 yards. Schoch added 53 yards on 13 carries and caught four passes for 29 yards.
Drew LeFever had seven tackles for the Starfires.
Justyn Hart ran 27 times for 125 yards to lead the Patriots, and Dossen chipped in 49 yards on nine attempts. Dossen also threw for 75 yards on 7-of-22 passing.
