City reviews 2015 numbers
Portland City Council
Portland City Council on Monday evening gave the 2015 budget its first approval.
It also approved a compliance form for TLS by Design’s tax abatement.
Mayor Randy Geesaman said council will hold another public hearing Oct. 6 before adopting the budget, which is $6,524,115.
That’s about $250,000 less than the budget for 2014.
The advertised tax rate for 2015 is $1.806, but that’s expected to be less once its approved by the Department of Local Government Finance.
Geesaman said the advertised rate is typically higher than the rate ends up being. It’s expected to be similar to this year’s rate, which is $1.4245.
“We try to keep the budget as close as we can from one year to another,” Geesaman said.
TLS by Design didn’t turn in its tax abatement compliance form in May, and the tax abatement advisory committee recently caught the error, Jay County Development Corporation executive director Bill Bradley said.
Geesaman asked the council to approve it because of the positive impact TLS by Design has done in Portland during the last year.
“I’m hoping everyone understands it was just an oversight on everyone involved,” he said.
“It’s a great improvement on that end of town,” councilman Kip Robinette added.
In other business Monday, council members Mark Hedges, Kip Robinette, Bill Gibson, Judy Aker, Michael Brewster, Kent McClung and Don Gillespie:
•Approved a street closing for the Jay County Historical Society. The organization is having its Heritage Festival Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 and needs sections of Main and Pierce streets and Sandy Hollow Lane closed from 5 p.m. Oct. 3 through 5 p.m. Oct. 5.
•Learned the city’s clean up week is Sept. 22 through Sept. 26.
•Heard Geesaman is traveling to Chicago today to meet with the Federal Aviation Administration about Portland Municipal Airport’s runway justification study. Last month, the aviation board learned the FAA wouldn’t support its justification at this time. Geesaman said he hopes the trip will result in the FAA approving the justification.
•Was reminded Geesaman’s public forum with the west side of the city is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Judge Haynes Elementary.
