Stars struggle to find end zone against Leo
SAHS football
LEO — The Starfires were able to gain some yards. They just couldn’t find their way into the end zone until it was far too late.
South Adams High School’s football team scored its only touchdown with just 10 seconds to play Friday in a 28-8 loss to the Leo Lions.
While the Starfires (1-4, 1-3 Allen County Athletic Conference) struggled to find paydirt, Austin Rinker scored twice as he and fellow Leo running back Logan Leiter each averaged more than 9 yards per carry.
Rinker, who ran the ball 12 times for 111 yards, opened the scoring with a 4-yard TD run midway through the opening quarter. After the Lions found the end zone twice in the second period, Rinker capped their scoring with a 7-yard touchdown scamper with 3:10 on the clock in the third.
South Adams, which tallied 269 yards of offense, finally got on the board when Rinker took a safety with just over three minutes left in the game. Its lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Josh Lahr in the waning moments.
Skylar Schoch was able to grind out 83 yards on 20 carries to lead the Starfire offense, and quarterback Derek Wanner added 59 yards on 14 carries. Wanner also completed 6-of-13 passes for 83 yards.
Conner Sealscott made 11 tackles to lead the South Adams defense, and Brandon Dailey added seven.
Leo (2-2, 1-1 ACAC), which won despite turning the ball over twice on fumbles, got 133 passing yards on eight completions by Kray Klopfenstein, who also had a 1-yard touchdown run. Leiter ran nine times for 86 yards, and Jordan Hissong added a 15-yard TD run.
After playing back-to-back games on the road, South Adams will return to Berne on Friday to host the Adams Central Flying Jets.
