Kellie Fortkamp crossed the finish line in second place Tuesday in Jay County’s cross country meet at Hudson Family Park.
The Patriot girls did not qualify for a team score, losing to the Bluffton Tigers and Southern Wells Raiders.
Jay County’s boys team beat the Raiders, who also did not have enough runners for a team score, but lost to the Tigers 17-47.
Fortkamp ran to a time of 21 minutes, 26.47 seconds, trailing Meghan Yencer of Southern Wells by seven seconds. Erika Kunkler finished in 10th, Gabby Kunkler was 13th and Kay Morgan was 18th.
Tanner Craw finished fourth overall with a time of 18:36.84, nearly a minute behind Bluffton’s Kevin Moser.
Michael Denney was seventh, Alex LeMaster placed ninth, and Dustin Cope and Travis Barton were back-to-back in 16th and 17th respectively.
Star girls top Leo
BERNE — The South Adams girls cross country team picked up a big win against the visiting Leo Lions on Tuesday, 25-30.
The Starfire boys lost a tough race to the Lions, 27-28.
Olivia Von Gunten placed second with a time of 20 minutes, 17 seconds, to lead the Starfire girls. Kara Seffernick was second and Aleesha Goodwin was fifth. Hadi Hawbaker crossed the finish line in sixth, and Katelin Hawbaker was ninth.
Bailey McIntire won the boys’ race in 16:56. Sawyer Miller was three seconds behind him in second, and David Steffen placed sixth. Cole Litwiller and Briar Goodwin were ninth and 10th respectively.
EJ records fall
Kendra Muhlenkamp and Skylar Myers ran their way into the East Jay record books on Tuesday.
The two set school records in the middle school cross country meet at Hudson Family Park.
Muhlenkamp crossed the finish line in 12 minutes, 11.72 seconds, beating the previous school record by six seconds, and helping the EJMS girls to wins over the Bluffton Tigers, Southern Wells Raiders and West Jay Eagles.
Myers had a time of 12:25.28 to break the old school record by 12 seconds. Myers and the Chiefs also picked up three wins.
The West Jay boys and girls team lost all three of the triple-dual races
Following Muhlenkamp for East Jay were Miranda Alig (fourth), Kristy Alig (fifth), Cheyenne Liette (10th) and Lita Chowning (14th).
Sophia Fugiett placed third to lead West Jay, with Lexus Harding (sixth) joining her in the top 10. Lilly Clemmons (19th), Catherine Stafford (28th) and Jaiden Roser (34th) also scored for the Eagles.
For the EJMS boys, Tayler Smeltzer was fourth, Mason Winner placed sixth, and Brayden Sprunger and Yuri Miyatsu were back-to-back in ninth and 10th respectively.
Daniel Fugiett led the Eagles with a fifth-place finish. Matthew Paquette (eighth), Ian McCombs (16th), Ethan Andershak (17th) and Logan Brown (28th) also scored for West Jay.
