ROCKFORD, Ohio — The Indians were hoping 2014 would be an historic season.
On Friday night, they put themselves in the record book.
For the first time in the 23-year history of its program, the Division VII No. 8 Fort Recovery High School football team boasts a 4-1 record after rolling over the host Parkway Panthers 42-8.
The Indians (4-1, 2-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) were up just 14-8 after a touchdown and two-point conversion by Parkway (0-5, 0-3 MAC) early in the second quarter.
But they extended the advantage to 21-8 when Cole Hull launched himself into the end zone to finish off a 4-yard run with 3:49 to play in the second quarter, and then took control before halftime.
The teams traded possessions on fumbles just two plays apart, and Fort Recovery took advantage of its second chance.
After a timeout, Mitch Stammen leapt over Ryan Lautsenheiser to make a 28-yard reception at the Parkway 21-yard line. On the next play, Darien Sheffer pulled the ball away from defensive back Kevin Flaugher, juggled it and then secured the catch in the left corner of the end zone.
He added the extra point for a 28-8 lead, and the rout was on.
Fort Recovery, which leads Division VII Region 26 in computer points, got two more touchdowns on runs of 1 and 14 yards from Kyle Schroer in the second half for the final margin.
Martin’s passing led the Indians, who have never advanced to the playoffs, as he went 17-of-24 for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
Wes Wenning had 62 yards on six receptions, including a 4-yard TD in the first quarter, and Stammen and Sheffer also caught passes for scores.
Schroer led the ground attack with 82 yards on 18 carries. Hull chipped in 41 yards on 10 attempts.
Nathan Lochtefeld recorded two of the Indians’ four interceptions.
Cody Coffman ran 14 times for 76 yards to lead Parkway, but his team couldn’t muster much else. Quarterback Hayden Abromovach was limited to 8-of-18 passing for 54 yards.
Fort Recovery will seek to reach the five-win mark for just the third time in school history when it visits New Bremen at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
