BERNE — South Adams owned the first half. But it couldn’t keep the Flying Jets grounded for 48 minutes.
Adams Central went to the air in the second half to erase a 14-0 deficit, scored on the first possession of overtime and then got a defensive stop to hand the host Starfires a 21-14 defeat.
Adams Central (2-4, 2-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) needed only one play to get on the board in overtime, as Hunter Bates got around the corner and scampered to the end zone.
South Adams moved the ball inside the 1-yard line on its possession, but was pushed back by a false start penalty and a fourth-down pass from Derek Wanner to Isaiah Amstutz fell incomplete.
Amstutz scored twice for SAHS (1-5, 1-3 ACAC) in the first half, but the Flying Jets closed the gap to 14-7 on a Koty Frauhiger 2-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
And after forcing a three-and-out in the fourth quarter, they turned to their passing attack.
They took the ball at the 16-yard line following a 61-yard punt and moved about 20 yards before a Bates catch on a fourth-and-10 play kept the drive alive.
About a minute later, Luke Voirol pulled in a 28-yard TD pass from Andrew Hammond, who then booted the extra point to tie the score.
South Adams, which will play Friday against Jay County for the first time since 1984, got 112 yards on 8-of-13 passing from Wanner.
Kyle Cox was his favorite target, hauling in five passes for 87 yards.
Wanner also added 49 yards on the ground, and Skylar Schoch, who suffered an arm injury late in the fourth quarter, added 48 yards on 14 carries.
Drew LeFever finished with 13 tackles, including a sack.
Four of Hammond’s seven completions went to Voirol (68 yards) as he totaled 129 yards to help lead the Adams Central comeback. Bates ran 24 times for 118 yards.
