VAN WERT, Ohio — Fort Recovery baseball coach Jerry Kaup hopes the trend won’t last.
Get an early lead, fall behind, rally for the win.
The Indians overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third inning Tuesday, scoring four runs in the third and three in the fourth for an 8-3 road win against the host Lincolnview Lancers.
“It’s not the pattern that we’re hoping to follow for the rest of the season,” said Kaup, whose team won in come-from-behind fashion in consecutive games. “We’d like to get up early and push it through (to the end). But you have to have that resiliency. We understand it is a seven-inning game.
“There are punches thrown by each team, and we’re hoping that our punches are better at the end.”
It was the one-two punch of the middle innings for Fort Recovery (2-0) that stunned the Lancers (0-1).
Cole Wendel and Jackson Hobbs led off the third with back-to-back singles, and Jacob Homan doubled to right field to drive in Wendel from second.
A double steal put Hobbs and Homan at second and third respectively, and senior Derek Backs hit a blooper over the second baseman for the first of his pair of two-run singles. His base knock gave the Indians a 4-3 lead, and they would not trail for the remainder of the game.
“I got lucky on the first two (hits),” said Backs, who finished with three hits — all singles — and four RBIs. “You’ve got to take those bloopers and bleeders. I’ll take them right now.”
Kaup said Backs, the Indians’ No. 5 hitter, is in the prime spot of the lineup to score his teammates.
“That’s an RBI spot, and what we’re looking for him to do is drive some runs in,” he said.
The next inning, Backs drove in Hobbs and Homan again with a single up the middle, this time with two outs. Hobbs was walked intentionally and Homan was hit by a pitch for the second time of the evening. He’s been hit three times in his first two games with Fort Recovery.
“We have a system that we have to have a big inning and score with two outs,” Backs said. “We’ve been doing that. We’re getting our confidence. It’s big for the season.”
Backs then stole second, and came around to score on single by Kyle Schroer. All but one of the Indians’ starting nine had a hit, and they finished with 11 total.
And if the third and fourth innings were set-up blows, Wendel delivered the knockout punch from the mound.
After surrendering three runs — two earned — in the second inning, Wendel only allowed three base runners for the remainder of the game.
Dalton Schmersal reached on a single in the third inning but was thrown out by Derek Backs attempting to steal second. Dylan Lee hit a single through the right side in the fourth but was left stranded, and Schmersal was caught in a rundown after a single in the sixth.
Wendel gave up six hits while striking out four in seven complete innings.
“I was feeling good,” the senior said. “I had some of my best stuff tonight.”
Fort Recovery, which plays a Crestview team that made it to the Division IV Final Four last season, delivered the first punch Tuesday with one run in the game’s opening inning. Wendel drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Hobbs ripped a double to the gap in right center, scoring Wendel on the first of his two hits. Hobbs also had a pair of stolen bases.
Lincolnview answered with a trio of runs in the second, thanks to a fielding error and a mental lapse by the Indians on a double steal. Cole Schmersal, Wyatt Schmersal and Lee all came around to score for the Lancers.
“I thought we played well at times,” said LHS coach Eric Fishpaw. “The second inning we put up a three spot. We had a lot of energy and got some big hits in the bottom of our lineup.
“We just have to continue to have more productive innings and find a way to score more runs.”
Jalen Roberts went the distance on the bump for the Lancers, taking the loss while striking out eight and walking two.
