Quirk in relationship worked in his favor

Interruption in Routine

Every relationship is defined by quirks.
These peculiarities held between couples can span the gamut, ranging from downright hilarious to potentially useful. In my case, I find the oddities of my current relationship entertaining, and in this certain instance these peculiarities ended in my benefit.
You see, I’m guilty of an unusual offense when it comes to masculine roles in society. In high school I was an athlete. The courts and the diamond were my stomping grounds.
That’s normal.
What maybe isn’t is the fact that I enjoyed participating as an athlete, but as a sports fan I’ve always come up considerably short. Now don’t get me wrong, I love going to see games in person. If I get a chance to visit Wrigley Field or Lucas Oil Stadium I always jump on it. But if people start talking about so and so’s victory from the night before or how that one guy is getting traded, I’m at a total loss unless by some miracle I happened to glance at a television when ESPN was on.
I suppose it’s just that if I’m not there to experience the roar of the crowd or play myself, I just don’t invest a lot of my time staying on top of these things. Not that there’s anything wrong with sports, obviously, I just choose to use my time a bit differently when it comes to entertainment.
Now here’s where a quirk of my relationship comes into play. Sara, my girlfriend, bleeds cream and crimson. If it’s college basketball or football related, she knows what’s going on. In fact, her whole family is comprised of die-hard IU fans. More often than not if I’m at her family’s place I have to sit and nod while they gush over Yogi Ferrell.

So when the time came for me to fill out my bracket this year for the NCAA tournament I was at a bit of a loss. Here comes Sara to the rescue.
And by rescue I mean she outright held my hand as I limped through the process. She helped me make it through a majority of my picks, laying basketball knowledge on me left and right. Was I ashamed? No, not particularly. At least not at the time.
Then the results came in for The Commercial Review’s bracket challenge. I got second. Needless to say, I was simultaneously shocked and impressed by my girlfriend’s bracketology skills
Prior to the final game I was trailing, laying claim to eighth place. But the final pick of Duke bumped me all the way to second place. On the bright side, I’m pretty sure I’m the one who picked Duke … I think? For my pride’s sake I want to believe it anyway.
But hey, if not I guess I’m no worse for wear. Except I might catch some flak in the office now.
I suppose this experience demonstrates why some relationships work. People complement each other, and in the end differences can help fill in the gaps of their partner’s persona.
