Elementary, high schools earn Four Star honor
BERNE — South Adams took its nickname to heart.
The Starfires earned the Four Star School designation at both the elementary and high school levels for the 2013-14 year. Superintendent Scott Litwiller congratulated principals Shelly Miller and Trent Lehman during a special school board meeting Tuesday after Indiana Department of Education released the list earlier in the day.
Also Tuesday, the board praised students and volunteers for their efforts during Friday’s Feed My Starving Children event and approved a field trip request.
The Four Star designation goes to schools that rank in the top 25 percent in two ISTEP-based categories. In order to be eligible, schools must also have earned an A grade from the state.
The honor went to 281 schools in Indiana, with South Adams as the only corporation in Adams County to have a school make the list. Bluffton also earned the honor for its elementary and high schools, and Jay County’s lone winner was East Elementary in Portland.

“I’m very proud of that; very proud of our staff, our teachers, support staff, our students because they’re the ones that make this happen,” said Litwiller.
He noted that South Adams Middle School nearly earned the Four Star designation as well.
Litwiller also complimented those who helped pack more than 100,000 meals Friday as South Adams group Dots in Blue Water partnered with Feed My Starving Children. He said officials from the organization told him the event had more volunteers, specifically young volunteers, than any other they’ve held before.
“It was just really neat to see elementary kids and even preschool kids working with high school kids to pack those things,” said Litwiller. “It was a good day, and it made me proud to be a Starfire.”
The board agreed to allow two auto trades students to take a field trip April 30 and May 1 to the Ford/AAA contest in Indianapolis.
